The next time you go to a birthday party, take note of what the presents are wrapped in. How much of that—the gift wrap, gift bag, tag, bow, ribbon, or tape—contains plastic? There is hidden plastic in all of this wrapping, including plastic membranes, but glittered wrap is especially bad, as glitter is just pieces of microplastic which then get all over and into everything, including eventually wastewater systems…and wildlife. In addition, only plain paper wrapping is recyclable, not shiny, metallic paper. So be sure to look for wrapping paper that is actually made of paper, even better out of 100% recycled paper. You might try your hand at an artistic effort using brown paper, natural twine, and dried flowers, or even patterned fabric!
