We’re often uncertain about what to do with cellophane, that clear wrap that is used to bag cookies and candies, protect fresh flowers, and cover groceries. First, is the wrap natural cellophane, or is it plastic? That may not be easy to tell! True cellophane, which is made of cellulose and therefore plant fibers, is biodegradable and compostable, however it is not recyclable. Cellophane that is made of polypropylene, which is plastic, is not biodegradable, but it is recyclable. If you can determine what the wrap is made of, always opt for a plant-based product rather than encouraging the production of more plastic!
