As the daily news will remind you, the wildfire season is starting earlier and lasting longer, with more intense fires and tremendous negative impacts on both human and bird communities. Although fire is a natural process that plays an important role in ecosystem health, wildfire caused by careless people can cause serious damage to sensitive habitats and the bird species that depend on them. Know the current regulations regarding campfires wherever you might want to recreate and, if campfires are allowed, take care to completely extinguish them before leaving your site. Also avoid using fireworks, machinery that could cause a spark, driving or parking on dry vegetation, or smoking outside. The scenic vistas, forests, and wildlife you treasure will still be there if you take care with fire.
