We all know about important U.S. environmental legislation such as the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and the Endangered Species Act. You may have also heard of the Farm Bill, which is one of the most important pieces of legislation affecting farmers and rural communities…and, perhaps surprisingly, also bird conservation. In particular, the conservation programs of the Farm Bill can greatly benefit grassland birds, which have suffered more dramatic and sustained population declines than any other group of birds in the contiguous U.S. (http://www.stateofthebirds.org/2017/). There is also the Recovering America’s Wildlife Act, which will redirect funding to state fish and wildlife agencies to help wildlife at risk, including birds. As a bird lover, it is important to follow such legislation, and to let your voice be heard to help support and secure funding for it.
