As the days get shorter and cooler in the northern hemisphere, we tend not to give much thought to the process of turning on lights and heat in our houses. But it is a good time to evaluate whether we actually need to use all that electricity and fuel. There are many actions we can take to reduce our consumption of utilities, which not only helps the planet but also lowers our bills. Consider how you can modify your typical use of lighting in the house, turning on only the lights you absolutely need when and where you need them, and also making sure all your light bulbs are energy efficient. The same applies to heating only the rooms you’re in regularly, turning the heat low in and closing off those rooms you don’t often use. Conservation of energy is a powerful strategy we should always employ as a first, prudent action!
