Although professional ornithologists routinely collect data on bird populations, there are many
citizen science opportunities which allow amateurs to contribute significantly to what we know
about birds. Beyond annual bird counts such as the Christmas Bird Count and Great Backyard
Bird Count, the largest biodiversity-related citizen science project in the world is eBird.
Managed by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the eBird database provides invaluable information
on bird distribution, abundance, habitat use, and trends. To learn more about eBird and get
started using it, go to eBird.org or download the eBird app on your phone.
