As birds migrate from their breeding grounds in Canada and the United States to their wintering grounds in Mexico and elsewhere in Latin America and the Caribbean, it is a good time to ponder how we, collectively, try to protect migratory birds throughout their annual life cycle. What a daunting prospect! One initiative that is dedicated to this “full annual cycle” effort is the North American Bird Conservation Initiative, or NABCI. NABCI engages partners in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico in achieving its vision that “healthy and abundant populations of North American birds are valued by future generations and sustained by habitats that benefit birds and people.” NABCI recently released a report on National Bird Conservation Priorities, which addresses priority habitats, land and water conservation, research and evaluation, engagement and partnerships, addressing threats, and policy and funding.
