The irony of our calling them “glasses” is that not much eyewear these days is made with glass at all. While some eyeglass frames on the market use various metals, both the frames and lenses of many eyeglasses are now made of high-tech plastics. To avoid plastics you can certainly choose metal frames, and there are even some “plastic” eyewear frames made with castor seed oil, a plant- based alternative, but it may be hard to avoid plastic lenses which are lightweight and comfortable. However, if you have a drawer full of old prescription eyeglasses or sunglasses you don’t use anymore, you can make a difference by donating them to a local optician who participates in a program to give used glasses to those who are in need, either in our country or overseas, so your old plastic glasses doesn’t end up in the landfill.
