If you have worked hard to establish native plants in your yard to provide food and cover for birds, you’ll want to get busy in spring tackling the weeds which will inevitably start coming up. Such non-native plants can outcompete the native ones, stealing away precious water and denying birds the natural vegetation and healthy habitat they need. It’s important to be able to recognize the weedy species while they’re still small and before they set seed, especially those listed as “noxious weeds” by your state and county. Organize a neighborhood weeding party, since the weeds you have, will affect your neighbors’ yards, and visa versa, if not managed. And there’s no need for chemicals, which can harm birds and other wildlife…pulling weeds by hand will work!
