We all know that plastic pollution is a global issue, but how does one approach solving something so daunting? Many of our World Migratory Bird Day Conservation Calendar actions are intended for individuals, ideas for how we can make changes in our everyday lives to benefit the birds we love and the habitats they depend on. There are larger scales at which actions can take place, too, and some are indeed bold. Canada’s Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, just announced a country-wide ban on “single-use” plastics in Canada effective 2021. Although what this ban will cover has not yet been determined, it may include many of the common culprits like straws and stirrers as well as fast food containers. The European Union just voted in March to ban single-use plastic such as straws, stirrers and cutlery, also by 2021, so the world is on a roll! Similar legislation is being considered at the state level in America, and is being raised to the Federal Government. Contact your legislators and urge them to join this inspiring and necessary effort to protect both human health and the natural environment that sustains us!
