It’s still National Bird-Feeding month. Today, we ask you to remember the hummingbirds. Cleaning your hummingbird feeder is a crucial component to keeping hummingbirds healthy. It is important that you clean your hummingbird feeder around every three days, especially if it is warm. Without the regular cleaning and maintenance, your hummingbird feeder can grow mold within the nectar. Because of their small size, hummingbirds can become severely ill with any bit of contamination in their food.
To clean your feeder:
- Pour all of the old nectar out of the feeder
- Use a brush to scrub the inside of the feeder tank clean with soap or vinegar. Not all bacteria will be visible, so it is important to complete this step.
- Rinse the feeder with hot water and soap.
- Put your feeder back together, and you are done!
