Did you know that chewing gum is made from plastic? Historically, gum was made from the resin or sap from trees and used by indigenous people around the world. Today, however, most gum is made from butadiene-based synthetic rubber, a polymer (plastic), similar to that used on car tires. Not only does this pose an obvious risk to consumers’ health, but like other plastics, it sticks around the environment indefinitely. Because gum has no official disposal processes, it is likely all the gum we have chewed throughout our lives is still somewhere in the environment! Thankfully, there are now plastic-free options. Check out this list of all-natural chewing gum!
