In this era of ever more frequent shipping of products to our homes from around the world, and also from just across town, it behooves us to think about the packaging that this habit requires. So much of what we receive, whether from Amazon or Smith’s, is enclosed in plastic. In light of the threats to our planet from plastic, the manufacturing sector is struggling to find ways to reduce the plastic used when shipping products. It comes down to basic budgetary considerations—how expensive is the shipping material, how much will it weigh, how well will it protect what is being shipped—as compared with the importance to a company and its customers of being green. It is incumbent upon us to let our preferences—and frustrations—be known, so that industries can start to make the shift away from plastics to more sustainable packaging.
