Today is Earth Day and the first day of the Caribbean Endemic Bird Festival. This regional celebration highlights the 176 species of birds that are endemic—the ones that live only in the Caribbean. A wide variety of events will take place across the region through the next month to raise awareness about the region’s high endemism and what ordinary citizens can do to help conserve birds and their habitats. This annual celebration is organized by the nonprofit BirdsCaribbean, and events are hosted by groups on many islands. This year we celebrate with the theme Year of the Bird.” Activities include birding excursions, presentations, tree plantings, art and photography competitions, and more. To learn more, visit BirdsCaribbean and follow us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter (@BirdsCaribbean). If you would like to organize an event in your Caribbean island, contact Ingrid Flores, Regional Coordinator ([email protected]com)
