’Tis the season for cycling and running races, which are supposed to be environmentally friendly competitions, right? But how many outdoor events have you gone to where plastic water or other drink bottles are everywhere, offered to the competitors and spectators alike? Of course we have to be mindful of staying hydrated during summer activities, but that doesn’t mean we can’t do it right. While you might see racing events where bottles are thrown to the side of the road then eagerly chased down by fans as mementos, most competitions don’t garner such fame…but they can contribute a lot of trash. Just say no to race organizers and roadside vendors who are selling or providing liquids in plastic, and instead encourage them to support the use of refillable containers. Then bring your own reusable bottle or a backpack bladder, and enjoy the race!
