It hasn’t been very long since the salad “fixings” we used to chop up and put into a wooden salad bowl started being sold on refrigerated shelves of the grocery store, rather than with all the other vegetables. Now many shoppers opt for the convenience of pre-washed, pre-mixed varieties of salad materials which are packaged in plastic sacks or containers. You may have noticed that the “sell by” or “best used by” dates on these containers are not very far out, and once opened in the refrigerator the greens often go bad before they can be eaten. So, spare the packaging and make your veggies last longer by just purchasing your individual salad ingredients in the produce section. And if you really need a plastic bag to put the vegetable items in for transport, bring a reusable one you can clean out at home.
