We have come to depend on what it says on the bottom of containers about whether something is “microwave safe.” But that label does not mean it is safe for the humans consuming food heated in that container, rather that the container can withstand the microwaving process. There are concerns that some plastics used in microwaving food, whether a container or a film, may present a health hazard through chemicals leaching out of the plastics into food…but the story is complex. Given that you control what goes into your microwave and have cabinets full of other options, it’s best to grab glass or ceramic bowls and plates labeled for microwave use instead…which will protect you and also slow the production of more “microwave safe” plastics.
